Ethan teaches and supervises students in the areas of ancient Hebrew and biblical exegesis. He delights in helping students grasp the richness and significance of the Old Testament.
Ethan has written widely on the intersection of linguistics, philology, and biblical interpretation. His first book appeared in the Arbeiten zu Text und Sprache im Alten Testament series (2017). He later edited a collection of essays on Hebrew (Eisenbrauns, 2018). His next book deals with language and interpretation of 1 Kings 3-11 (Fortress Academic). As commenting on Scripture is a treasured and fundamental task of a biblical scholar, he is gladly preparing several commentaries. The first, written in German, will be on 1 Kings (SCM). The second, Jonah, will appear in the Text of the Hebrew Bible series (Sheffield Phoenix Press). The third, Proverbs, is in the Kregel Exegetical Library series (Kregel Academic).
Amidst these works he is writing on his most beloved topic, Psalms. He is authoring a monograph tentatively titled Psalms as Poetry. In addition, he is writing a book on how the poetry of Psalms shapes the life of reader (Baker Academic). He is also editing a volume on reading Hebrew poetry (Brill).
His peer-reviewed articles and essays are found in international journals such as Zeitschrift für die alttestamentliche Wissenschaft (2017; 2020); Biblische Notizen (2018); Journal of Semitic Studies (2019); The Bible Translator (2020); Journal for the Study of the Old Testament (2021); Vetus Testamentum (2021); Journal of Northwest Semitic Languages (2021; 2024); Scottish Journal of Theology (2022); Revue Biblique (2024; 2024); Irish Theological Quarterly (2023); and monograph series, Cambridge Semitic Languages and Cultures (Cambridge, 2021); Linguistic Studies in Ancient West Semitic (Eisenbrauns, in press).
